IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock and install IKO-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials throughout West Palm Beach, and most jobs run between $1,100 and $3,400 installed depending on deck damage and material spec. Our trucks carry IKO and equal-spec alternatives, so we’re usually able to diagnose and repair the same day we come out. You’ll know you have a problem when you see water stains on your ceiling, curling shingles near a valley, or a roof that feels soft underfoot where the deck has been holding moisture.
Most West Palm Beach homeowners discover deck issues during a leak investigation, not a routine inspection. IKO makes good underlayment, but no underlayment survives a failed seam, a missing drip edge, or a deck that’s been wet for months under a Florida sun that bakes everything on top of it. Travis Oakley has been pulling apart roofs in this climate for decades, and the story’s usually the same: a small entry point, a big quiet rot problem underneath.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
IKO’s underlayment lines split between synthetic and felt-based products. The most common in West Palm Beach are IKO StormShield, IKO Armourbase, and IKO RoofGard. Each has a different installation spec, and the failure mode differs too. StormShield is a peel-and-stick ice and water barrier; when it fails here, it’s almost always because the deck underneath didn’t get cleaned properly before installation, or because a previous roofer skipped it in a valley where Florida’s afternoon storms push water sideways.
Armourbase and RoofGard are more forgiving for general deck coverage, but neither is rated to sit exposed for more than a few weeks once it’s rolled out. That’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: IKO’s warranty language is specific about exposure windows, and a deck that’s been sitting through two weeks of summer storms with underlayment only is a deck that’s already compromised before shingles go on. If you’re trying to identify what’s underneath your roof, look for the IKO logo printed along the roll edge. Measurements vary: StormShield comes in 36-inch widths, Armourbase in 48-inch, and RoofGard in 36-inch. Getting the width right matters when we’re matching existing coverage and trying to avoid butted seams in the wrong places.
On OEM versus aftermarket: IKO’s branded underlayment is solid, but there are equivalent synthetic products from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed that meet or exceed IKO’s spec at a similar or better price. We carry several of these on the truck and we’ll tell you plainly what the cost difference is. The important part isn’t the logo, it’s the material class, the exposure rating, and how it’s installed. We won’t upsell you into a brand name that doesn’t change the way your roof performs.

Signs Your IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or walls after a storm. This is the classic first signal. In West Palm Beach, the culprit is often a failed seam where two underlayment runs meet, letting wind-driven rain through. The shingle above can look perfect while the underlayment below is doing nothing to stop water.
- Granules in your gutters, especially along the roof’s edge. Losing some granules is normal age, but if you’re seeing bare spots or asphalt-black grit concentrated in one area, water is getting under the shingle layer and degrading the underlayment underneath it. Heat accelerates this: a South Florida deck bakes at 140 degrees and never really cools down in summer.
- A soft or spongy feel when you walk the roof. That’s deck rot. Plywood and OSB don’t recover once they’ve been waterlogged, and West Palm Beach’s humidity keeps them damp long after the rain stops. If you can feel give underfoot, the deck needs replacement, not just an underlayment patch.
- Curling or lifting shingles near valleys, vents, or flashing. These are the spots where underlayment gets cut and layered, and they’re the first to fail when the detail work wasn’t done right. A lifted shingle edge tells you the underlayment below has lost its adhesive bond and is starting to separate.
- A stale, musty attic smell with no obvious leak. Underlayment holds moisture against the deck, and a deck that’s been quietly damp for months will scent the attic. By the time you notice it, the affected sheeting is usually past the point where a patch is smart money.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For IKO underlayment and deck repair in West Palm Beach, most homeowners pay between $1,100 and $3,400. The range breaks down like this: a small deck patch with new underlayment runs $1,100 to $1,800; a partial deck replacement in one or two sections runs $1,800 to $2,800; a full deck replacement with new IKO-spec underlayment and reinstallation of existing shingles runs $2,800 to $3,400.
What drives the spread? The percentage of deck that’s rotted, the slope of the roof, the number of penetrations we have to flash around, and whether the existing shingles can be reused or need replacement. We put the price on paper before any work starts, and that number doesn’t move at the door. Every job comes with the 365-Day Done Right Promise: it’s guaranteed in writing for one full year, and if the repair fails within that period, we come back at no charge. No change orders, no “we found something else” at the last minute.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or with a ladder you trust: look for lifted shingles, check drip edges for missing sections, and clear debris from valleys. But deck repair on a South Florida roof is not a weekend project. Getting it wrong means a leak that keeps leaking, and every month of delay adds to the deck replacement cost. The tools alone for safe deck work, including fall protection, will cost more than a small repair on a lot of roofs.
And the real risk is that a half-finished underlayment job leaves the deck exposed to a sudden afternoon storm. We’ve pulled more than one emergency tarp off a half-done DIY job in Northwood Hills after a bad forecast. If the deck is soft or you’re seeing ceiling stains, don’t guess at it. Call us at (728) 203-3066 and we’ll give you a straight read on what’s actually happening under the shingles.
FAQs
IKO underlayment lasts 15 to 20 years when installed correctly, but West Palm Beach’s heat and humidity shorten that window when the roof has poor ventilation or the deck holds moisture. Synthetic underlayment handles the climate better than felt, which is why it’s the standard on our jobs.
A small section can be patched if the deck underneath is dry and solid. If the deck is soft or crumbling, patching the underlayment is wasted money because the base isn’t holding. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before we quote anything.
Most jobs finish in one day, including deck replacement. Larger sections, steep slopes, or unexpected rot can push it into a second day. We’ll give you a time window when we write the estimate, and we show up inside it.
